Fixed inductors are electronic components which are used to store energy in an electrical field. The most common type of fixed inductor is the 5512-RC, a single-phase, inductance-coupled resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit. In this circuit, an alternating current (AC) is applied to a winding of tightly wound wire, creating an electromagnetic field which induces an opposite voltage in a second coil. This second coil is then connected in series with a resistor-capacitor (RC) circuit.
The 5512-RC inductor has two primary applications: voltage transmission and transient absorption. In a voltage transmission application, the inductor is placed in a series with a damping resistor, where one side of the inductor is connected to the incoming voltage source and the other side of the inductor is connected to the downstream load. The current flowing through the inductor creates a magnetic field which oxidizes the damping resistor. This reduces the load-side voltage, resulting in a smooth voltage supply. In a transient absorption application, the 5512-RC inductor is used in association with a damping capacitor to condition current surges resulting from load switching, lightning strikes, or other causes.
The 5512-RC inductor can also be used in harmonic filtering applications, where it is placed in a series circuit with the source impedance. The inductor is designed to reduce or even eliminate the harmonic frequencies from the input voltage. In some cases, the inductor is also coupled to other circuits, such as filters, for broad-spectrum filtering.
The intrinsic working principle of the 5512-RC inductor is based on the mutual inductance between two coils. When the primary coil is subjected to an alternating current, a secondary voltage is induced in a second coil, which is then connected in series with a resistor-capacitor circuit. This circuit creates a voltage-sensing effect, allowing the inductor to automatically adjust the current flowing through it.
The 5512-RC inductor is a versatile component which can be used for a variety of applications. Its primary purpose is to provide smooth, stable voltage, either by controlling the voltage transmitted from the source to the load or by absorbing transient voltages from load switching or other sources. The inductor can also be used in harmonic filtering applications to reduce or even eliminated harmonic frequencies in the input voltage. The intrinsic working principle is the same in all of these applications, based on the mutual inductance between two coils, and the voltage-sensing effect created by the associated resistor-capacitor circuit.
