Fixed inductors widely play critical roles in many applications. The 5516-RC type is a special choice of fixed inductors which is renowned for their high performance and quality. In this article, we will discuss the application field and working principle of 5516-RC type inductors.

The 5516-RC type is a type of fixed inductors that provide low DC resistance, high quality factor, compact size design and high current carrying capacity. It is a multi-functional fixed inductor due to its wide adoption in high frequency switching mode power supplies and other electronic devices. It is a type of MIL-PRF-15305 qualified fixed inductors that provide improved quality performance at frequencies between 400MHz to 500MHz.

These types of inductors mostly find use in switching mode power supply, communication and test systems, RF and other electronic equipment due to their high frequency capability. Moreover the very low DCR ensures low power dissipation and maximization of power supply efficiency. Furthermore, they are compatible for being used in various electrical circuits due to their small size, better thermal stability and wide operating temperature range.

The basic working principle of the 5516-RC type fixed inductors is simple and easy to understand. These are used to store energy within a magnetic field. Essentially when an electrical current runs through a winding coil of an inductor an electrical field is created within it. This then produces a magnetic field within it which is responsible for stored energy. The magnetic field however varies depending upon the current intensity, number of turns around the coil and core material used. Moreover, when the current flows through an inductor a voltage is generated across it of polarity opposite to the source connected.

The 5516-RC type fixed inductors are also distinguished for their different types of construction. The construction may involve air-core, ferrite core or ceramic core depending upon the application. An air-core inductor uses assembly of intertwined winding coils but without any ferrite or ceramic core material. A ferrite core inductor on the other hand uses a ferrite core material for producing magnetic field instead of air-core inductor. Last but not least, a ceramic core inductor utilises a ceramic core material along with a single winding coil for producing a magnetic field.
