The working principle of 588R160X2CAT is based on the PLL circuit. When power is applied to the oscillator, the voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) generates stable oscillator signal. The oscillator signal is then passed to the frequency divider set and then to the phase detector, where the frequency signal outputted by frequency divider is compared and adjusted to the reference clock frequency. The output voltage of phase detector is then passed to a series loop filter and then to VCO. The loop filter works to eliminate the high frequency components of the output of the phase detector, providing a DC voltage level as a control voltage to the input of VCO. As VCO the voltage level changes, the frequency of the output signal changes accordingly, which creates a positive feedback, in turn locking the output of phase detector and reference clock frequency. This process of locking output to reference signal is referred to as phase locked loop (PLL).
