TVS - Diodes

Transient voltage suppressor diodes (TVS diodes) are breakdown diodes used to protect electronic circuits from an overvoltage transients. They are often used to protect equipment input and output ports from high voltage spikes.

The 5KP12C is a type of TVS diode designed to provide 6 kV peak of surge protection over a wide range of temperatures, from -40 to +125°C. The 5KP12C is a single-line diode with common cathode technology and its case style is DO−214AB.This diode is available with standard IEC- and ESD−compliant ratings.

The 5KP12C is a bidirectional diode, made of glass passivated junction, it has a press-fit configuration for easy mounting. The UNI-POL of this diode is reverse standoff voltage, with minimum ‘off’−state breakdown voltage up to 8.2 kV. The 5KP12C can dissipate up to 750 watts peak, and offered in a range of common industry packaging options for efficient thermal dissipation. The lead temperature during soldering should not exceed 260°C, with a duration of no longer than 10s. Additionally, this diode has a response time of less than 1ns, making it suitable for use in EMI/RFI noise suppression and lightning protection of sensitive electronic circuitry.

Application Field

The 5KP12CTVS diode can be used for different kinds of surge protection on industrial, automotive, aerospace, and military applications. It is mainly used to protect equipment against transient overvoltage, from secondary power sources like generators, motors, handheld controllers, and associated equipment used in fuel systems, automotive, combustible gas, and carbon dioxide systems.

This enclosure material protects the circuitry from dust, humidity, and other factors which would otherwise degrade the performance. The 5KP12CTVS diode can also be used for surface-mount technology (SMT) on communications infrastructures, electrical and electronics appliances, cell phones, PCs, HVAC control systems, lighting systems, and fire alarm systems.

Working Principle

The 5KP12C diode is designed to behave as a “valve”, quickly clamping the voltage and protecting components from damaging ESD, lightning and other transient voltage events. When the device voltage rises up to the breakdown voltage, the diode starts to conduct, diverting the excessive current away from the sensitive components and providing part of the anti-surge protection needed. The 5KP12C is a bidirectional diode, and as such, it can allow positive or negative current to pass through it.

This diode has clamping voltage between 6–8.2 kV depending on the dynamic resistance. The dynamic resistance of the diode is lower than 0.5 ohms, allowing the current to flow efficiently and providing protection with minimal voltage drops. This makes it an ideal solution for automotive, industrial, and military applications, as the transient overvoltage protection must not hinder the operation of the system.
