Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diodes, also known as bidirectional suppressors, are semiconductor, avalanche diodes designed to protect sensitive electronic components from electrical surges due to lightning or power line transient events. TVS diodes have an extremely low dynamic resistance and can typically protect against transients up to several thousand volts.

When a transient or surge is encountered the device conducts current at a level determined by the difference in the potential. As the surge’s voltage drops, the diode turns off the surge current, thus protecting the circuit.

It is also used in many commercial applications, such as audio-video systems, cameras, and computers.
