The 5KP20CA-HR TVS - Diodes are designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment from damaging voltage spikes or transients caused by events such as switching power supplies or electrostatic discharge.

It is designed to protect against high frequencies and non-saturating transients, such as lightning and electrical surges. The working principle of the 5KP20CA-HR is based on the basic features of a TVS or transient voltage suppressor. This opposes the electric field of the applied voltage and reduces the transients.

The anode is the majority terminal with a negative potential in respect to the cathode and it is connected to the ground terminal. The cathode is the minority terminal with a positive potential in respect to the anode and it is connected to the circuit\'s power supply or source.
The anode and cathode are connected in parallel for symmetrical operation thus providing equal protection for each current direction, which is ideal for protecting data, signals or other bi-directional lines in circuit designs. When a transient pulse of energy is introduced into the device, the anode and cathode become reverse-biased, thus allowing electrons to move from the anode to the cathode.
Once the electron concentration at either end of the diode zone exceeds the breakdown voltage, the diode zener effect is triggered and an avalanche current begins to flow, dissipating the energy stored in the transient pulse throughout the device. This process of dissipation of transient energy is referred to as clamping and is the most important feature of the 5KP20CA-HR.
The clamping voltage of the 5KP20CA-HR TVS – diodes, is defined as the highest reverse-bias voltage at which the device has substantial leakage current. The clamping voltage of these devices is typically 19.2V, and higher voltages can be obtained using external resistors and capacitors. This makes these devices extremely useful in protecting sensitive components from high voltage transients.
The 5KP20CA-HR TVS – diodes also have a variety of other useful features such as high-temperature operation, low capacitance, fast response time and excellent surge capability. This makes them ideal for high-speed applications such as high-frequency switching and motor control circuits. The 5KP20CA-HR can also be used in systems that require overvoltage protection, ESD protection or a combination of both.
