Introduction
TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) Diodes are solid state unidirectional none linear voltage clippers. Their function is to limit and clamp voltage transients which is much more than the normal working voltage of a system/ appliance. In addition, they provide surge protection by limiting the energy of the transients to a safe level. This article is about the 5KP58-B TVS diode and the application fields and working principles.
Application Fields
The 5KP58-B TVS Diode is mainly used for Circuit Protection and Power Supplies. In circuit protection, it provides protection from ElectroStatic Discharges (ESD) and other transient voltages by providing a low impedance path for the current flow. In power supplies it protects from damage due to lightning surges and power line transients by clamping the excessive voltages to the permissible levels.
Application of the 5KP58-B TVS Diode is also suitable for devices operating at high frequency which are sensitive to ESD, Secondary Overvoltage, and EFT (electrical fast transient). Therefore, such components can be effectively protected from hazardous voltages.
Working Principle
The 5KP58-B TVS diode working principle is based on the construction of the device. The diode consists of two sections, anodes and cathodes. Between the anodes and the cathodes, a Gate structure is placed acting as a small electric field which triggers the break-over diode. When a large surge of voltage is applied, this gate structure breaks the tunneling path through the diode and therefore captivating most of the energy thereby clamps the voltage.
The 5KP58-B TVS diode starts conducting when the applied voltage exceed to the threshold voltage and stops when the base voltage reduces to the zero state. It has the ability to repetitively switch on and off for a defined time period thus providing better device performance and faster protection. Furthermore, this diode has high current carrying capacity up to 8.3A making it suitable for heavy duty applications.
In conclusion, the 5KP58-B TVS Diode is a fast switching, high current rated diode ideal for providing surge protection. Its application is mainly in Circuit Protection and Power Supplies.
