TVS – Diodes (Transient Voltage Suppressors – Diodes) are special two-terminal components, which are used for the purpose of protecting semiconductor devices such as Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) and virtually any type of integrated circuit (IC) such as microcontrollers (MCUs) and central processing units (CPUs). The 5KP60A-B device, which is a uni-directional TVS diode, is a component that is chiefly deployed to protect sensitive semiconductor equipment from both electrical overstress (EOS) conditions, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), and from surge transients induced by lightning, power-crossing, and power inductive loads and other sources.

The 5KP60A-B device is based on a popular DO-214AC (SMB) package, which features an inch footprint diameters of 5.3mm X 8mm and a peak pulse power of 600W. In addition to its 800 Wimp surface power design, the 5KP60A-B unit is also composed of high-temperature copper electrodes for optimal heat sinking for greater dissipation, lower levels of surge, and improved electrical requirements.

The operating voltage of the 5KP60A-B ranges from 5V to 600V, area of application is portable electronics, telecommunication equipment, and many other electronic products, and enables a maximum clamping voltage of 6V, enabling the component to maintain the low clamping voltages found in the industry. The device also has a peak pulse power rating of 600W (10/1000 microseconds) and is certified to UL CSA approved standards.

As the current increases, this causes a ‘clamping’ of the voltage to a desirable level determined by the component, hence providing protection for the semiconductor device from substantial current and voltage levels.

The 5KP60A-B is ideal for providing robust protection. It is designed to protect against both inductive and capacitative ESD transients, and the shape of the avalanche breakdown, as well as the broadband frequency response, gives the 5KP60A-B a much higher level of protection than what is afforded by conventional silicon diodes.
