RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) transponders, tags and readers are becoming increasingly popular technology in a variety of applications including asset management, warehouse management, supply chain management and many other. The purpose of a RFID system is to enable one or more items to be identified using wireless technology rather than barcodes or physical identifiers. In other words, a RFID system consists of an antenna, a reader and transponders (also known as tags).[1]

Many different types of RFID tags are available, but all of them operate in a similar fashion. A RFID transponder consists of a small circuit board and an integrated antenna. A RFID tag typically contains a unique ID code that is associated with a particular asset, product or item. When the tag is scanned by a reader, the unique ID code is transmitted. This information can be used to identify the item and record its location or status in a database or other system.

RFID readers are devices used to read and write data to and from tags. Typically, a reader is a transceiver that emits a signal and receives back the signal from the tag. Depending on the type of tags and readers used, the distance between readers and tags may vary. But in general, most of the readers have the capability to read a tag from up to several meters distance. The readers usually have an interface connection to external devices such as computers or controllers.

RFID systems generally operate in three different modes: Passive, Semi-Passive and Active. As the names imply, passive tags are devices that simply allow the reader to read the data stored on the tag. They do not receive any energy from the reader and rely entirely on a magnetic field generated by the reader.[2] On the other hand, active tags require power from the reader in order to broadcast their unique ID code. Semi-passive tags, also known as semi-active tags, are devices that receive power from the reader but do not broadcast their ID code until they receive a signal from the reader.

RFID transponders, tags and readers are used for a variety of applications such as asset management, inventory management, access control and tracking. Asset management is the process of tracking the whereabouts and the status of an item. RFID can be used to keep track of items such as laptops, computers and other equipment. Inventory management is the process of tracking the quantity and location of inventory items such as parts and components. RFID can be used to track the movement of parts and components in a warehouse environment.

Access control is the process of controlling and granting access to physical and logical resources. RFID tags can be used in combination with readers to control who is granted access to certain areas or rooms. Tracking is the process of keeping track of the movement of people and/or goods. RFID tags can be used to follow the movement of goods from one place to another.

RFID transponders, tags and readers have many benefits. They are generally faster and more accurate than traditional methods of identification and tracking. They are also more cost-effective and require less personnel to operate. Additionally, RFID tags are small, durable and lightweight, making them well-suited for a variety of applications. Furthermore, they are widely available and easy to use.

The future of RFID technology is bright. Currently, RFID transponders, tags and readers are used in a variety of industries such as manufacturing, retail, logistics, healthcare and automotive. As RFID technology continues to evolve and become more cost-effective, it is expected that its use will expand to many more industries. As more technology companies develop hardware and software solutions for RFID applications, the future looks brighter for this technology.
