Rectifiers are an essential component of all power electronic and electric circuits, even as far back as electric motors in the 19th century. In the most general sense, rectifiers are any device that converts electrical energy from alternating to direct current (AC to DC). The main type of rectifier used today is the single-phase, four-terminal-pair, or 60S4 TP rectifier. This simple and reliable device has been used for many years in a wide variety of applications and is the foundation of most modern electric motor and AC-DC converters.

A 60S4 TP rectifier is basically a four-terminal device composed of four diodes that are connected in an arrangement known as a "center-tapped" configuration, allowing a single input current of alternating current (AC) to be split into two parts, each with either half-wave or full-wave rectification. By providing current to each terminal pair, the AC voltage will be converted to DC voltage with either a single bridge rectifier or two separate rectifiers.

The 60S4 TP rectifier is typically used in small appliances and electric motors. They are often found in power supplies, electric drives, inverters, and other applications where a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective way to change AC voltage to DC voltage is required. The 60S4 TP rectifier has been used in a variety of electrical applications such as chemical and process industry, where it has proved to be both efficient and reliable.

In order to understand the working principle of a 60S4 TP rectifier, it is important to first consider what happens when alternating current (AC) electricity is passed through a rectifier. When an AC voltage is applied across a diode, the diode will allow the current to flow in only one direction, rectifying the AC voltage into DC voltage. This rectified current is then either full-wave or half-wave, depending on the configuration of the four diodes.

In a full-wave rectifier, two of the diodes are responsible for the positive portion of the AC waveform, while the other two diodes take care of the negative portion. The output voltage of a full-wave rectifier is therefore twice the magnitude of the AC source voltage. In a half-wave rectifier, only one diode is used, so the output voltage is the same magnitude as the AC source voltage.

To create a four-terminal arrangement, the configuration is rotated 90°, so that the diagonally opposite pairs of terminals are connected. This arrangement gives rise to the "center-tapped" concept, since the two middle terminals provide the reference voltage. As the AC voltage is applied across these two middle terminals, the other two terminals provide the positive and negative voltages. This centers the voltage across the two connected terminals and produces a stable DC voltage.

The center-tapped four-terminal arrangement has several advantages over other configurations. The main advantage is its design simplicity and low cost. Additionally, the output voltage can be modified by simply adding or subtracting diodes to the circuit, something that is not possible with other rectifying arrangements. Moreover, this arrangement offers greater control over the output voltage due to the ability to modify the reference voltage.

The 60S4 TP rectifier is one of the most commonly used rectifiers because of its simple, efficient, and cost-effective design. It has found use in a wide range of applications, ranging from AC-DC converters to electric drives, inverters, and other power electronics. With its excellent performance and low cost, the 60S4 TP rectifier is ideal for any application that requires reliable and efficient rectification.
