The limits are expressed in dB-A/m2, where dB-A/m2 is a measure of sound energy.

Testing to ensure that the noise emission from the equipment is within the acceptable limits is done in a specially designed acoustic chamber. This chamber is designed so that the equipment under test is enclosed in an environment with little or no noise other than the equipment under test itself. Measurement microphones are placed in the chamber and the measurements are taken while the equipment is operating. The noise emitted from the equipment is then compared to the limits for the particular type of equipment.

If the noise emitted is higher than the defined limits, a number of measures can be taken to reduce the amount of noise emitted. This can include soundproofing the equipment, replacement of noisy components, installation of noise reduction filters and the introduction of acoustic enclosures. If these measures do not reduce the noise then alternative equipment should be sourced.
