Trimmer Potentiometers

Working Principle

When a voltage is applied to the two ends, resistance along the linear path is varied, resulting in different levels of resistance between the two end terminals. In rotary type designs, the resistor is made in the form of a half circle, with the two end terminals connecting the two sides of the half circle. When a voltage is applied to the two ends, the variable resistor is adjusted by rotating it along the half circle.

In both cases, the resistance is adjusted by applying either mechanical force or electrical signal. The mechanical force can be applied by rotating a selector knob or sliding a selector arm, while an electrical signal can be applied by passing a DC or AC current through the two end terminals. The level of resistance between the two terminals is therefore varied according to the application. These variable resistors are often used in conjunction with other components to achieve the desired results.
