Aluminum-Polymer Capacitors: 6SXE33M Application Field and Working Principle

Capacitors play a key role in modern electronic circuits, providing an important source of stored electrical energy. Aluminum-Polymer capacitors, or polymeric aluminum electrolytic capacitors, are a type of capacitor developed in the mid-1960s. This type of capacitor has since become very popular due to its unique combination of characteristics, such as high capacitance, high voltage ratings, low ESR, low ESL, long life, high ripple current, and high temperature ratings. The 6SXE33M aluminum-polymer capacitor is a specifically designed device produced by the world-renowned manufacturer Vishay, specifically designed to meet the needs of high power, automotive and industrial applications. This capacitor features an anodized aluminum case with an electrolyte impregnated polyester film dielectric, giving it a broad range of design and performance characteristics. The 6SXE33M has a capacity range of between 470 µF – 47 µF, and voltage range from 10 -100 V. It can handle up to a peak temperature of 105oC, with a ripple current of up to 3.0 A. It is also resistant to both high humidity and vibration, making it particularly suitable for automotive applications. The 6SXE33M aluminum-polymer capacitor can be used in both low power single equipment and high power multi-equipment applications. In low power applications, its high capacitance, low ESR, and low ESL make it ideal for buffering applications and voltage stabilizing applications. In high power applications, its high ripple current, high temperature tolerance, and vibration resistance make it ideal for filtering and regulating power supplies.The way an aluminum-polymer capacitor works is by using an anodized aluminum case and an electrolyte impregnated polyester film dielectric to form two parallel plates. The anode plate is covered with a dielectric material, and the cathode plate is exposed. When an electrical charge is applied to the anode plate, it creates an electrostatic force which draws electrons from the cathode plate to the anode plate. As the charge builds up, a strong electric field is created between the two plates, creating a capacitance which stores energy in the form of an electrical charge.The aluminum-polymer capacitor features two main advantages over aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Firstly, it has a much lower ESR and ESL, which improves the reliability of its power supply applications. Secondly, it has a much higher temperature rating, which means it can be used in much higher temperature applications as mentioned above. Overall, the 6SXE33M aluminum-polymer capacitor is an excellent choice for both low power and high power applications.
