Common Mode Chokes are electromagnetic devices that in modern electronic systems are used to limit or eliminate undesired high frequency currents or electromagnetic interference (EMI). The 7106 is a particular type of Common Mode Choke from Digi-Key Corporation which is used to provide filtering and shielding from EMI in response to radio frequency (RF) signals.
The 7106 is designed to effectively reduce EMI radio interference while allowing signal integrity to be maintained. This is done by using a particular arrangement of coils that reject or reduce noise/interference while allowing signals to pass through, thereby filtering out undesired signals reducing interference. It comes in a compact, low profile surface mount package measuring just 0.75” x 0.41” x 0.38”, making it ideal for applications where space constraints are a factor.
This type of choke is used in many different applications such as in power supplies, RF systems, audio devices, and medical imaging systems. It is used to provide filtering, shielding, and/or impedance matching between electrical components. For example, it is often used to suppress noise in audio circuits, isolate and balance signals for data transfer, and provide protection against EMI for sensitive electronic components.
The 7106 works on the principle of a toroidal core that consists of several layers of electrical conductors. An outer layer made of copper provides electromagnetic shielding while an inner layer made of iron is used for conducting the current. The choke works by wrapping a copper wire around the core to create a coil. This coil acts as an inductor, producing a magnetic field that is concentrated in the core. When signals containing EMI pass through the outer layer of copper, they are stopped by this magnetic field before they can interfere with the desired signal.
In order to provide an effective filter, the 7106 must be adjusted appropriately. The design of the filter must take into account factors such as the frequency of the undesired signals, the application for which the filter is being used, and the amount of attenuation required. A device such as this is typically affixed to a PCB or other circuitry to provide the required shielding.
