Working Principle

The 74AC540SJ consists of 4 standard three-state trigate buffers with their respective inverting and non-inverting outputs. The basic arrangement of the 74AC540SJ is to provide a single 5V power source to four independently operating buffers. Each individual buffer has common input and output pins, allowing for operation from a single source. The buffer also includes an output enable pin. This enables control of each individual buffer; in turn, allowing more flexibility when dealing with complicated circuits.

The output of the buffer can be enabled by the output enable pin. When the Output Enable pin is active, the output of the buffer is enabled and will drive data to its respective output pin. Otherwise, the buffer will remain in an inactive state, but the data on the input pins remains intact.

The 74AC540SJ buffers operate over the full operating voltage range of 2 V to 5.5 V. This is possible due to the employment of a wide supply range CMOS technology. Due to the use of this technology, the 74AC540SJ can drive up to 20 mA of load current, while maintaining its output level. Additionally, the device outputs can be switched from logic 0 to logic 1 and vice-versa within 5ns.

In addition to the standard three-state buffers, the 74AC540SJ includes an additional buffer for the output enable pin. This buffer is used to provide a more stable output enable control signal. With this pin, the output enable transitions can be controlled in a more predictable manner.
