Working Principle
The 74AC11138N consists of a 3-to-8 line decoder/demuxer with two active LOW enable inputs—EN1 and EN2. The logic device uses two input logic signals (A and B) to select one of the eight output lines (Y0 to Y7). EN1 and EN2 are active LOW enable inputs and an active LOW output enable (OE) is also provided. The overall device will be disabled when either EN1 or EN2 is LOW regardless of the states of the other inputs. OE must also be LOW for the device to be enabled.
The 74AC11138N operates in either decode mode or demultiplexer mode depending on the polarity of the EN1 and EN2 inputs. In decode mode, the device uses the combination of A and B logic signals to select one of the eight outputs. In demuxer mode, the device uses the combination of A and B signals to activate one of the eight outputs. In both modes, the output signals are either asserted (logic 0) or negated (logic 1) and are controlled by the OE input.
The device can also be configured to operate as a 3-to-2 line decoder or 2-to-8 line multiplexer by hard-wiring one of the inputs to either logic 0 or logic 1. In either of these configurations, the EN1 and EN2 inputs should be tied to the same logic level to enable the device.
