Flip-flops are of a major interest as they are one of the basic building blocks of an electronic circuit. They are used both as sequential logic and combinational logic circuits. The clock signal is what sets the two main operations of the flip-flop, which are the SET and RESET operations.The SET operation occurs when the clock input is ‘high’ and the J and K inputs are both ‘high’. This results in the Q and Q’ outputs both being ‘high’. The RESPET operation occurs when the clock input is ‘high’ and the K input is ‘high’ and the J input is ‘low’. This results in the Q and Q’ outputs both being ‘low’.The PRESET input will also override the J and K inputs as well as the clock signal. When the PRESET input is ‘high’ both the Q and Q’ outputs will be ‘high’ regardless of the states of the J and K inputs, or the state of the clock. Likewise the CLEAR input will override all other inputs and the Q and Q’ outputs will be ‘low’ when the CLEAR input is ‘high’.In conclusion, the 74AC74SC is a dual JK Flip-flop that has numerous applications ranging from data storage to signal routing and switch control.
