The 74ACT16240MTD is a high-speed, low-power 3-State octal transceiver/register with TRI-STATE outputs and separate input, output and output enable controls. TRI-STATE is a registered trade mark of National Semiconductor Corporation.
The 74ACT16240MTD can be used to transfer data and control information between two buses. It is capable of providing true 3-state outputs with very high release speeds and is able to operate from a single +5V power supply. Additionally, the 74ACT16240MTD is fully compatible with TIA/EIA-485-A standard for balanced line driver/receiver applications.

The 74ACT16240MTD has inverted outputs and input enables which allow data to be transferred in either direction. The inputs can be connected directly to the outputs of an interface device, transferring data in the opposite direction. The output enable (OE) controls allow data to flow in one direction only with the other outputs in a high impedance state. The 74ACT16240MTD also provides protection from damages when used in wired-and applications.
Working Principle of 74ACT16240MTD:
The 74ACT16240MTD consists of two sets of independent transceivers with 3-state outputs, including a low-power "sleep mode". The transceiver includes an enable (OE) and an output enable (OEB) input for each data channel. When OE is low, all outputs are in a high impedance state. When OE is high and both outputs are enabled, data at the A or B inputs is transferred to the corresponding Y or Z outputs. If one output enable input is low, the output enable input with the lower voltage (OE or OEB) will be applied to the output.
The device also includes an active “sleep mode” feature, activated when OE is low while both output enable (OEB) inputs are high. This mode reduces current consumption to 10μA (max) and ensures no data stored in the transceivers will leak out. Additionally, this device has 3.3V CMOS levels on both side, with 0V to +3.3V range TTL and LSTTL compatible inputs and outputs on the 5V side. The inputs on both 5V and 3.3V sides are 5V tolerant and ignore signals lower than 0.8V.
The device also includes an internal bus-keeper which holds unused inputs at a valid logic state. This feature prevents the outputs from a floating state, and can also be used to simplify system operation. The bus keeper also provides a “fail-safe” operation on VCC = less than 1.4V, powering the output and holding the output in a low or high state according to the inputs.
