74ACT74 Application Field and Working Principle

The 74ACT74 is a member of the fast 4000 family of CMOS logic devices. It is a dual D-type flip-flop with independent data (D) inputs, clock (CP), direct set (S) and reset (R) inputs and complementary Q and low-impedance Q outputs. It has low (7 ns) output-to-output propagation delays and can directly drive digit lines of bus organized systems.

Application Field

The 74ACT74 is used for a variety of applications, including data registers and memory storage, information transfers, shift registers, counters, multiplexers, demultiplexers, binary-to-decimal converters, and a multitude of other uses. Its high-speed characteristics, combined with low DC power consumption, make the 74ACT74 ideal for synchronous logic implementations. When clocked, the outputs of the 74ACT74 follow the state of the input signals, thus eliminating the need for separate data latches and registers and allowing the use of fewer logic devices.

Working Principle

The 74ACT74 contains two independent D-type flip-flop functions that can be used either together or separately. Each flip-flop is enabled through a common Clock Pulse (CP) input. Its data input is determined by the level of a Data (D) input. The data can also be set or reset directly by means of the Set (S) and Reset (R) inputs. When the CP input is low, the logic level present at the Set (S) and Reset (R) inputs will control the state of the flip-flops.When the CP input is high, the input conditions are not registered by the flip-flops, and no output transitions will occur. The flip-flops are logically constructed so that both outputs, Q and Q, will change state simultaneously when any one of the input conditions is changed.Each flip-flop consists of an arrangement of N- and P-channel MOS transistors coupled with Q and Q outputs for each section. When the CP input is low, the S input is provided with a high signal level, thus causing the Q output of flip-flop Section A to go high. Conversely, the R input would cause the Q output of Section A to go low. Since the 74ACT74 contains no buffers between its input and output, the clear (reset) and preset (set) states will be maintained until a logic level change occurs on the clock input.
