74F579SC is a twelve-bit synchronous counter, which was manufactured and sold by Fairchild Semiconductor. 74F579SC can be classified under the logic family of counters, dividers or shift registers. This device is composed of two different counters: two three-bit, four-stage and three four-bit, two-stage, both contained in a single 16-pin package that needs a positive power supply. This device allows cascading and provides all the necessary signals for operating synchronous counters.74F579SC is designed for applications requiring multiple count actions as well as for control signals. It provides some of the more complex count functions and allows designers to tailor microprocessor-based solutions to their particular requirements. The device also offers wide range of applications such as distributed pulse generators, pulse width modulators and repetitive pulse generators.In terms of its working principle, 74F579SC starts counting from 0000 and follows the order of binary state when counting. It is usually clocked by a signal from an external source, such as the system clock. The clock signal transitions from logic low to logic high when the counter is activated. The counter cycles through all twelve possible combinations of 01s and 0s and then returns back to 0000.To reset the counter, one needs to apply a low signal to its reset input. The counter stages are aligned such that the most significant bit (MSB) is the first to trigger a transition. When the counter has reached its full count, the most significant bit produces a pulse known as the Overflow pulse.
