The 74VHC4040FT is a CMOS 12-stage binary counter which is suitable for decade, divide-by-N or up-down applications. It can be used to count or divide down frequencies or as a pattern generator. It has two set-reset inputs ("CLEAR" and "LOAD") and a unique feature in which parallel outputs (Q0-Q11) have been implemented in a four 10-pin packages. The 74VHC4040FT is a member of the 74VHC 4000 logic family. This logic family has the same CMOS technology process as the 7000 series and 5400 series, so inputs are TTL compatible. This family has better noise margin, lower quiescent power than the AC/ACT devices.
The working principle of the 74VHC4040FT is very simple.
