RFI and EMI - Shielding and Absorbing Materials
Radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are forms of energy generated by various electronic devices that can interfere with signal transmission in nearby electronics. They occur when an unwanted signal produces an electro-magnetic disturbance that disrupts another signal. Shielding and absorbing materials are intended to help reduce the effects of both RFI and EMI, allowing for better signal transmission.
The 8.26X12-6-AB5030 shielding material is a metallized elastomeric made from a state-of-the-art copolymer polyester and aluminum. Its metallic core is of a special low density as it is a composite of aluminum and other specialized polymers. This shielding material is extra thin and strong, has superior elasticity, and is able to provide exceptional shielding for RFI and EMI.
A shielding material’s primary application field is to correct the negative effects of EMI and RFI in the applications where low-loss power lines or signal lines exist. In this regard, most devices contain electronics that have an electromagnetic shield or casing that is composed of a shielding material such as the 8.26X12-6-AB5030. Examples of such sectors include an automotive setting, communication products, and higher-end electronics.
The working principle used in this shielding material consists of two components: Faraday’s Law and the Conductivity Principle. Faraday’s Law states that when an extra-low frequency (ELF) signal, or electromagnetic field, is present, the radiated fields should follow the lines of magnetic force. This means that if an open circuit in the screened enclosure is established, an electric current will run around the perimeter of the conductor and create a magnetic field. The electricity from the current will then interact with the incident signal, thus partially cancelling the “noise”.
The Conductivity Principle states that the screened object will become an extension of the power or signal line when a closed circuit is established. In other words, the current will move through the circuit and create the electromagnetic field, which in turn shields the area. Thus, the device in the area is protected against RFI and EMI.
The strength of the 8.26X12-6-AB5030 shielding material lies in its ability to minimize the effects of both RFI and EMI. It is designed to provide excellent shielding properties in low-loss power lines or signal lines, offering protection against unwanted interference from external sources. The unique structure of its metallic core as a composite of aluminum and other specialized polymers, combined with Faraday’s Law and the Conductivity Principle, provide superior protection and enables this shielding material to remain lightweight and yet highly efficient in shielding against various forms of RFI and EMI.
