RFI and EMI - Shielding and Absorbing Materials

Radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are forms of energy generated by various electronic devices that can interfere with signal transmission in nearby electronics. They occur when an unwanted signal produces an electro-magnetic disturbance that disrupts another signal. This means that if an open circuit in the screened enclosure is established, an electric current will run around the perimeter of the conductor and create a magnetic field. The electricity from the current will then interact with the incident signal, thus partially cancelling the “noise”.

The Conductivity Principle states that the screened object will become an extension of the power or signal line when a closed circuit is established. In other words, the current will move through the circuit and create the electromagnetic field, which in turn shields the area. Thus, the device in the area is protected against RFI and EMI.
