Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are electronic components sometimes described as an insurance policy taken out for a system or circuit. They are designed to ensure safe operation by providing a relatively large amount of current protection over a wide range of voltages. Many types are available to meet the demands of different applications. Commonly referred to as a GDT, this arrester can also be known as a spark gap, a spark-gap arrestor, a surge arrestor, a voltage-sensitive device, or a varistor.
The utility of GDTs lies in their ability to clamp or reduce transient overvoltages within acceptable limits. This occurs through a combination of shielding and shunting techniques where excess voltage is dissected through a gas-filled gap in the anode/cathode spacer. The gas used in GDTs is usually sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) due to its low dielectric absorption rate. Other gases such as nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) may also be used.
The 8017010000 is a GDT designed for use in high-frequency power monitoring circuits, such as those used to detect voltage spikes or other electrical irregularities within a power supply or electronic circuit. It has an operating voltage of 8kVAC and is capable of withstanding an 8kVAC transient voltage impulse of up to 10ms without having to be replaced or adjusted. In addition, the arrester offers built-in surge protection of up to 10kVAC with a response and reset time of no more than 1ms. Furthermore, it can tolerate radiation levels up to 10kVAC with no degradation over time.
The working principle of this arrester is fairly straightforward. In operation, once the voltage pulls up within a certain range, the Gap or barrier inside the GDT breaks down, allowing current to flow freely between the two electrodes. This causes the primary breakdown voltage drop to be located across the device. This also triggers the secondary breakdown voltage that roughly represents the maximum value a GDT can tolerate without any significant issues.
Aside from surge protection, GDTs also offer other protection features such as overvoltage protection. They are equipped with kick-back diodes, allowing them to experience no significant increase in voltage beyond a predetermined level. This ensures that the GDT won\'t be permanently damaged in the event of an overvoltage condition.
GDTs are often used in power supply circuits, automotive electronics, computer peripherals, telecom and industrial applications, as well as security systems. With this wide range of applications, GDTs are well-suited to handle a variety of voltage spikes and pulsed power, providing reliable protection from transient voltage.
