TVS - Diodes Application Field and Working Principle

TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) Diodes are essential electronic components used to protect sensitive electronic circuits, systems, and equipment from dangerous surges of electrical transients. TVS diodes, which are also known as “protective diodes” or “transient absorbers,” are used to protect sensitive components and devices against voltage transients, also referred to as voltage spikes, that can dramatically increase the voltage in a circuit and damage them unless they are appropriately suppressed. TVS diodes can also maintain the device’s lower operating voltage when high transients are present.In typical application, TVS diodes are connected across a power line to protect its load from damaging transients induced in the AC or DC power networks. TVS diodes also provide an extra line of protection in hybrid and electric vehicles, ensuring that such vehicles\' safety systems are not affected by voltage surges that could disable the safety functionality, or even worse, cause an accident. TVS diodes are also used in data centers and phone systems to protect from lightning-induced voltage transients and to enhance overall system reliability.TVS diodes are used to protect sensitive components and devices from voltage transients, which are caused by events such as electrostatic discharges, flashover arcs, power cross conditions, and lightings, as well as circuit faults. These voltage transients, which can severely disrupt the circuit’s functioning, occur in both AC and DC applications. TVS diodes are designed to attenuate electrical over-voltage transients within the safe operating range of the circuit and within few nanoseconds.The basic working principle of a TVS diode is simple. When a voltage transient above the diode’s VBR is presented, the diode switches from its reverse biased state into a forward biased state. Once in a forward biased state, the diode begins to conduct the excess current and attenuate the transient to a safe level. When the transient dissipates, the diode switches back into its reverse biased state, where it remains upon the reapplication of normal operating voltage. TVS diodes are designed in a variety of different packages, such as 2-pin DIP (Dual-In-line Package), SMT (Surface Mount Technology), DO-35 (D-O-35 type package) and many other configurations. TVS diodes have the capability of handling power of up to several tens of thousands of volts with peak currents running into many thousands of amperes. Depending on the voltage and current ratings of the TVS diodes, the maximum energy absorption capability can vary significantly. The devices come in several power and breakdown voltage (VBR) ranges classified as low, medium and high power devices. These ratings depend on the design, internal structure and technologies used. Low-voltage devices generally support low breakdown voltages (VBR) 5V to 30V and continuous working voltages in the range of 5V and 15V. Medium-voltage devices generally range from 20V to 100V and high-voltage devices range from 100V upwards. There are also temperature rating for these devices ranging from -65°C to +175°C.In general, TVS diodes are used in various electronic devices to provide protection against transient surges. Examples such as the telecommunications industry, computers, lighting and consumer electronics, medical instruments, FM transmitters, avionics, automotive applications, and industrial systems.In conclusion, TVS diodes are commonly used to protect sensitive electronic devices, systems and circuits from hazardous voltage transients. They have the capability of handling peak transient currents up to several tens of kiloamperes and offer protection from harmful voltage spikes. As with all components, it is important to select the most reliable and suitable component for the application, to ensure that it will be able to withstand the transient conditions for which it is needed for.
