TVS - Varistors, MOVs

TVS is an acronym for Transient Voltage Suppressors and encompasses 3 main types of technologies that are used for suppressing transients on power and signal lines. These types are Varistors (variable resistors), Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) and Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS).Varistors, also known as Voltage Dependent Resistors (VDRs), are devices made up of metallic particles enclosed in an insulator. When the voltage applied across the device exceeds the Varistor’s breakdown voltage, current is allowed to flow between the metallic particles and thus dissipate the transient energy. Varistors are commonly used in many applications such as transient overvoltage protection circuits, lighting and electric protection, and surge suppressors. These devices act as a one-way valve, only allowing current to flow in one direction and activate when the environment exceeds its breakdown voltage. Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are voltage dependant nonlinear devices made up of sintered mixtures of metal oxides and other materials. MOVs are frequently used in overvoltage protection applications due to their ability to absorb and dissipate large surges of energy in short periods of time. The typical breakdown voltage of MOVs ranges from 12VDC to 3kVDC and protection levels can be achieved up to 200A 10/1000 µs. MOVs are a cost effective way to protect against overvoltages from power spikes and lightning strikes.Finally, a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) is a diode based device designed to protect against transient voltages and currents. These devices operate by quickly dissipating the energy from transients such as EFT and lightning strikes. TVS devices are typically used in applications where overvoltage protection is required such as on signal and data lines. The typical breakdown voltage of TVS diodes ranges from 60 V to 24 V.The 82536259 device is a varistor-type of voltage-dependent resistor used for suppressing transients on power lines.
