Solid state relays (SSRs) are an electronic switching device designed with optical isolation between the input control signal and the output load circuit. The output part of the device operates usually through the use of an integrated circuit. It offers low control power, high switching speeds, good input-to-output isolation, and low cost. Compared to mechanical relays, SSRs have a much longer lifespan and are compact enough to fit in most electrical circuits. Application Fields of SSRs

Working Principle of SSRs

Solid state relays work using an electrically isolated mechanical switch which is triggered by a current flowing through the input side. A sensor, typically a transistor, is used to detect the current. When the current is sensed, it triggers an electrical feedback signal that actuates the switch. This causes a small magnetic field to be generated which, in turn, changes the position of the switch, thus switching on the output circuit.

The switching action of an SSR is much faster than that of its mechanical counterparts, often with the full operation taking less than 0.1ms. The time it takes for the SSR to turn on and off is also much shorter, with a maximum of 1ms being reached. Finally, the power dissipation within the SSR is much lower due to its low switching speed and the very low current that is needed to trigger the switch.

Solid state relays are very efficient and low-cost devices compared to their mechanical counterparts and are often the preferred choice for electronic switching. They offer lower control power, high switching speeds, excellent input-to-output isolation and long life as well as being compact enough to fit into most electrical circuits.
