Lamps - Incandescents, Neons
The 8632 is a type of lamp that can be used in various application fields. It is mainly composed of two parts: the filament, which is an electrically resistive wire; and the envelope, which is used to protect the internal components of the lamp and serves as a medium to absorb (neon or other gas) into the bulb to facilitate the lamp’s operation. The filament is heated by the flow of current and emits visible light when heated. The 8632 is commonly used in situations where point sources of light and/or intense light are required, such as spot lighting or outdoor flood lamps.
Incandescent lamps are the most common type of 8632. They are composed of a glass envelope, filled with a gas, usually nitrogen and oxygen, and a metallic filament that acts as a resistor. Due to its electrical resistance, the filament is heated when connected to a power source, and emits light in the visible spectrum when heated to temperatures above 4,000 degrees Celsius. The lifetime of an incandescent lamp is determined by the type of filament used and its operating temperature, although vaporized tungsten particles may be deposited along the interior of the glass envelope which can reduce its life. Incandescent lamps are typically used in domestic and indoor lighting applications but can also be used for some industrial lighting purposes.
Neon lights are another type of 8632. They are composed of a glass container filled with a gas, usually neon, and two metal electrodes, one at each end. Magnesium and argon are often also included to enhance brightness and long life. The electrodes are connected to a power source, creating a spark in the gas, causing it to emit light in the form of a colored glow inside the lamp. This light is much dimmer than that of an incandescent lamp, and typically has a yellowish, greenish, or reddish hue to it. Dimmable light is also possible to achieve with a neon lamp. Because of the range of colors available, neon lamps are often used in signage or as accent lighting to create a distinct atmosphere.
both types of lamps have advantages and disadvantages which must be considered when choosing a lamp for a particular application. Incandescent lamps are cheaper to produce and have a long lifespan when used under optimal conditions, but they are energy inefficient and will operate at high temperatures, so must be used in properly ventilated areas. Neon lamps can create any color within the visible spectrum, and require low energy to operate, but their life is significantly reduced when compared to that of an incandescent lamp, and their high voltage operation may require specialized electrical equipment to operate safely.
