Relays that are rated to be able to handle more than 2 amperes of current are considered to be power relays. These relays are quite versatile and can be used in a wide variety of applications, from automotive and industrial to aviation and medical. In each of these fields, power relays will work to monitor and switch power based on varying input signals.

Applications

One of the most common applications for a power relay is in the automobile industry. It’s used to control a variety of functions, such as door locks, power windows, and horn activation. It is also used to control fuel pumps, starters, ignitions, and other relays as well. In the medical field, power relays can be used to monitor and switch power to medical equipment such as clean and ultra-clean air blowers, electric ovens, high temperature sterilizers, and autoclaves.

In industrial settings, power relays are used to perform motor and pump control, controlling high voltage circuits, high speed motion control, monitoring industry safety, providing overload protection, protecting high temperature processes, and continuously monitoring specific systems and processes. While power relays can also be used in aviation, they are most commonly found in the industrial sector.

Working Principle

Power relays are designed to control circuits that require more current than standard signal relays. Their basic working principle is fairly straightforward. When power is applied to the input side of the relay, a magnetic field is generated. This magnetic field is then used to attract a movable iron core, connecting the output side of the relay to the input, allowing current to flow. Once this current is enabled, an electromagnet is charged, the iron core is connected, and the power relay is active.

The power relay’s components all work together to enable current to flow when the input is energized. Once the power is shut off, the electromagnet\'s charge dissipates, the core is released, and the circuit is no longer complete. This cycle will repeat as the user alters the input situation, giving the user control over the power relay.
