Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) are computer-based controllers used in the modern industrial automation process. The main idea behind PLCs is to enable machines to carry out a set of predetermined operations without intervention from an operator. These set of operations are defined as a program or a code which will enable PLCs to trigger outputs or delayed outputs, depending upon the inputs given. Before PLCs, the only way for a machine to perform an operation was by using a complex array of mechanical switches and relays, such as mechanical organ-like components, as this is how machines like presses and printing presses used to operate. Those machines’ mechanisms were very complicated and inefficient. PLCs are much simpler, easier to program, and highly accurate, making operators’ life much easier.

PLCs can be used in different types of applications and environments, such as in the chemical industry, for robotic control, and in various other fields. PLCs are now used to control almost every type of machine in industrial establishments, from manufacturing to power plants.
