A gas discharge tube arrestor can be used in a variety of applications for both residential and commercial purposes. In residential applications, these surge protection devices can be used to safeguard home electronics, appliances, HVAC systems, medical equipment and other appliances. In commercial applications, these arrestors are commonly used to protect secure communication systems, computer networks, telecommunications equipment and other sensitive equipment from surge damage.The working principle of the arrestors involves using the capacitors to store up the energy during times of normal operation, and then releasing this energy when a spike or surge occurs in order to prevent damage to the equipment. The spark gap arrester is then used to dissipate this energy before it can reach the equipment. The spark gap controller then detects the spike and causes the arrester to fire.Gas discharge tube arrestors generally consist of three parts, the base, the arrestor element, and the resistor element. The base is the foundational part of the GDT, as it provides power to the LCR (inductor, capacitor, and resistor) circuit. The arrestor element is a metal tube which is filled with certain types of gases, such as sulfur hexafluoride and argon, and controls the electrical characteristics. The resistor element is responsible for reducing the remaining energy and allowing it to be safetly sent to ground. When a spike or surge occurs, the capacitors store up energy which is then diverted through the resistor element, and dissipated through the GDT before it can reach the equipment, protecting the equipment from damage. The spark gap arrester then executes its primary role of quickly discarding any residual energy out to ground, ensuring that the device will handle the highest surge without failure. In order to achieve maximum efficacy, gas discharge arrestors are designed with specific voltage ranges, and should be chosen according to the expected surge level. Additionally, an overvoltage limiter must be installed in-line to the GDT to prevent the arrestor from exceeding its voltage application level, which will cause the arrestor element to fail, as well as damage the equipment. Gas discharge arrestors may also be used in lightning protection systems to defend structures from lightning strikes. Connected directly to the ground, GDTs are placed on rooftops and other structural surfaces, retrieving the energy emitted from lightning strikes and diverting it to ground instead of the structures. Additionally, GDTs are utilized to prevent both production and communication cables from experiencing high voltage shocks or fire due to a surge of current resulting from a lighting strike. Overall, gas discharge tube arrestors are essential components of every surge protection system.
