A1220UB4LTP is a piece of TVS (Thyristor surge protection diode) which provides overvoltage protection for low voltage cables. It has reverse Stand-Off Voltage (Vrm) of 12V and reverse breakdown current(Ir) of 400μA. This device is designed for the protection of research, instruments, electronic equipment and communication systems used in industrial/military/commercial applications.
A1220UB4LTP typically has low capacitance and insertion loss which permits high-speed signal integrity. It is well suited and designed for surface mounting on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). It presents a low clamping voltage to the protected line without sacrificing safety requirements. Moreover, it offers current handling properties above those required by EMI standards.
The working principle of A1220UB4LTP has two parts. The first part is responsible for protection against overvoltage transients due to lightning and electric inductive disturbances. The second part is concerned with protection against power line and communication line transients. The device operates by limiting the voltage across the protected line while passing very small current through the protected line, thus providing a high level of inrush current protection to the equipment.
In the overvoltage protection mode, the diode of A1220UB4LTP will be under reverse bias and conduction will start only if the voltage exceeds the voltage clamping level. When the voltage exceeds the voltage clamping level, current will start flowing through the diode and this current will be limited by the Zener diode and will reduce the voltage across the line. Once the voltage reaches the zero voltage condition, the thyristor will be triggered by the switching signal and the device will return to a non‑conducting state.
In the power line and communication line transient protection mode, the diode of A1220UB4LTP will be under reverse bias. If the voltage exceeds the clamping voltage, the thyristor will be switched on. At this point, the reverse current of the thyristor will be limited by the Zener diode and the voltage will be clamped at a safe level. At the end of the pulse, the device will return to the non‑conducting state.
A1220UB4LTP has a wide range of applications. It is extensively used in industrial electronic equipment, office automation, communication systems, computer systems, entertainment systems, automotive vehicles, consumer appliances, and military applications. It is also used in critical power supplies and renewable energy systems such as wind turbines and solar photovoltaics. It provides reliable overvoltage protection, low capacitance and insertion loss for high speed signal integrity.
