A3940KLPTR is a Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) brushless DC (BLDC) motor pre-driver available in a small Surface-Mount Device (SMD) package.The A3940KLPTR chip is capable of driving motors up to 0.48 A continuous current and 1.5 A peak current.The chip offers current sensing, programmable operating delays, and over temperature protection features.
This BLDC motor pre-driver can help achieve an effective motor control system very quickly. By using a standard three-wire half-bridge topology, the pre-driver can generate a PWM signal for driving a motor directly. The motor pre-driver contains a bridge driver, an adjustable oscillator, an over-temperature-protection circuitry and closed-loop position control circuitry.
A3940KLPTR is suitable for many motor control applications such as computer peripherals (e.g. disk drive), printer, copier, scanner and other automotive applications. This chip is also suitable for any bidirectional motion control applications with a wide selection of winding configurations. The chip also supports a range of applications requiring a low voltage supply, and its low standby current reduces system power consumption.
Working Principle
The A3940KLPTR employs a special sensorless technique for achieving motor speed control and positional accuracy. Since the chip does not need any sensors to detect the motor speed and position, power consumption can be reduced.
To control the motor’s speed, the A3940KLPTR uses the Back EMF (BEMF) of the winding to provide feedback and maintain a constant peak current. This method eliminates the need of a speed sensor, thereby reducing overall power consumption.
The chip also integrates the concept of current loop controller, which is a more efficient way of controlling a motor as compared to the traditional pulse width modulation (PWM). It adaptively adjusts the peak current of the winding to meet the desired application’s speed. The peak current changes with the BEMF voltage which is sensed by the A3940KLPTR.
The A3940KLPTR also features an open loop controller which keeps the motor from running into an electronic stall condition. It does this by dynamically detecting the motor’s back EMF operating voltage. When this voltage drops to a predetermined level, the motor stops running. When the motor resumes operation, the open loop control reverts back to the closed loop control.
