A8512ELBTR-T is a Power Management IC (PMIC) for LED Drivers application. It consists of a highly integrated PWM controller, two high-voltage DC/DC boost converters, two regulated low-voltage current sinks and two FETs (Field Effect Transistors). The PWM controller is used to control the outputs of the two High Voltage Boost converters from which two regulated low-voltage current sinks can deliver precise current levels to drive one or more LEDs for backlighting applications. The features of A8512ELBTR-T make it suitable for many different LED applications such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) backlighting, Lighting Display and Automotive lighting applications.

A8512ELBTR-T offers excellent dynamic range, wide input voltage range, high-power-conversion efficiency, fast response time and a programmable interface. It is designed to boost/regulate the voltage/current of an LED backlight at a constant level regardless of input voltage, current or temperature variation. The PWM controller portion of the A8512ELBTR-T has several software selectable options that allow the user to configure the output of the two boost converters to best suit the application.

The PWM controller of A8512ELBTR-T includes an Adjustable Frequency Oscillator, Pulse Width Modulator and a 6-bit Multiphaser. The Adjustable Frequency Oscillator (AFO) is used to generate a given clock frequency that is adjustable and can be set for any frequency, between 400 kHz to about 20 MHz. The Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) is used to regulate the width of the pulse stream generated from the AFO. As the duty cycle and frequency of the PWM signal vary, the output voltage of the High-Voltage Boost converters can be regulated thus controlling the power to the LED. The 6-bit Multiphaser is used to sequence the outputs of the two High-Voltage Boost converters and is user-programmable.

The regulator portion of the A8512ELBTR-T has two individual current sinks which are user-programmable. The current sinks have an extremely precise current-sense mechanism that is highly accurate, even at high currents. The current sinks can be set to any level between 0mA and 40mA, allowing the user to set the desired output current for each LED. The FETs in the A8512ELBTR-T will enable the user to switch on/off the current to the LED’s.

The two high- efficient DC/DC Boost converters in the A8512ELBTR-T offer a power conversion efficiency up to 90%. The input voltage range is from 4V to 28V, and the output voltage range is adjustable from 8V to 32V. The boost converter offers constant voltage and/or constant current regulation and protection features such as under-voltage lockout, over-current protection and over-voltage protection.
