Thyristors - TRIACs is a type of semiconductor device which acts as a switch. It is primarily used in AC applications and it consists of two PN junction gates connected together in a reverse blocking or anti-parallel configuration. When the AC load is connected across the TRIC, AC current passes though the device when it is in the ‘on’ state, and it is interrupted when it is in the ‘off’ state. The device is usually triggered by a zero-crossing circuit which detects the beginning and end of each of the positive and negative half-cycles of the AC cycle. This allows the device to switch on and off, while protecting the device and the connected load from damage due to over- current and voltage surge.
