Data Acquisition is used to measure a range of values and store it in memory, or transmit it to further processing. Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) are an integral part of the data acquisition process, as they provide the interface between analog and digital signals. The AD5590BBC is an advanced high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) intended for use in data acquisition, test and measurement, communications, and factory automation applications. It is a monolithic CMOS device which features 500k-sps (kilo samples per second) sampling rate, 10-bit resolution and excellent ac performance.

AD5590BBC Application Field

The AD5590BBC digitizes analog input signals from voltage or current sources. It can operate from a single 5 V power supply and its sample rate makes it ideal for high-speed applications including those found in communications, digital audio, medical imaging and test and measurement. The fast sampling rate reduces the probability of aliasing, making the AD5590BBC an optimal solution for applications which require wide bandwidth and high power line frequency. Additionally, its excellent dc and ac performance provide superior analog signal translation. It has a 10-bit resolution, making it suitable for applications requiring higher resolution as compared to other 8-bit devices.

AD5590BBC Working Principle

The working principle of the AD5590BBC involves a Successive Approximation (SAR) conversion process based on a single-slope architecture. This type of architecture allows for the data acquisition of larger bandwidth input signals with higher speed. The SAR process consists of several stages, each of which corresponds to a specific control step. When the control steps are in progress, the device is considered to be in a settling phase. Those six steps are as follows:

  • Step 1 – Charge Pump: the system\'s Comparator window is engaged, allowing the voltage reference (VR) to be adjusted at the input by means of the onchip voltage-reference amplifier.
  • Step 2 – Capacitor Reset: the on-chip comparator is reset and the digital reference code is adjusted according to the output of the voltage-reference amplifier.
  • Step 3 – Input Amplitude Conversion: the input signal is converted to a digital format by the analog-to-digital converter.
  • Step 4 – Digital-to-analog Conversion: the digital reference code is converted back to an analog signal by the integrated digital-to-analog converter (DAC).
  • Step 5 – Comparator: the on-chip comparator is used to compare the analog signal from the DAC to the original input signal.
  • Step 6 – Status Output: the status output provides information regarding the completion of the sampling process.

When the control steps have been completed, the control code output provides the digital code which corresponds to the amplitude of the analog input signal.

The AD5590BBC also features a synchronization mode which can be used to ensure synchronous data acquisition of multiple channels. In this mode, the AD5590BBC is clocked by the synchronization signals provided by an external device, ensuring that the data acquisition of multiple channels is synchronized and free from errors.
