The AD623-02E is a fully integrated solid state magnetic switch device built using custom Giant Magneto-resistance (GMR) sensors and an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC). The AD623-02E solid state magnetic switch device measures magnetically induced changes in the GMR sensor output with an accuracy of better than ± 5 arcsec for detecting the presence or absence of a target magnetic field. The device can be used to measure absolute magnetic fields, slope fields, and intensity fields for applications such as robotic end effector position sensing, a variety of motion control applications, and automated vending machine systems. In addition, the device can be used in proximity detection applications such as keyless entry, secure enclosure access, security system intrusion sensing, and machinery automation.
At the heart of the AD623-02E is a custom Giant Magneto-resistance (GMR) sensor. The GMR sensor is highly sensitive to changes in magnetic fields, and is mounted on a substrate to provide desired output characteristics. The GMR sensor is coupled to an ASIC with two comparator channels to enable both digital and analog signal outputs. The excitation channel is driven by a sinusoidal waveform with an amplitude of 1–2 volts peak-to-peak. The signal is then measured at the output channel, with an analog output being produced at a frequency of 1 kHz.
The analog output is then further processed by the ASIC circuitry, which is configurable to provide the desired output signal. The output signal can be either digital (Open Drain / Open Collector) or analog (0-10V / ±5V). Additionally, the device includes two oversampling modes to enable precise positioning of the target magnetic field. The normal mode is used to obtain an approximate indication of the target field position, with the precision mode providing a more accurate position.
For applications that require a higher resolution measurement, the AD623-02E can also be configured for higher resolution positioning. The dual margin mode provides a more precise measurement of the field position, and can also be used to detect small changes in the magnetic field. The device also supports two-step detection, which uses a margin dependent voltage to detect and debounce the potential presence of a target.
