AD654JRZ is a voltage-to-frequency (V/F) and Frequency-to-Voltage (F/V) converter, a type of pulse-width modulation integrated circuit (PMIC), in which a voltage applied is to a certain conversion circuit converting the voltage into a frequency, or where a frequency into a voltage. This is a popular circuit for analog-to-digital conversion, interface communication and sensing.
The AD654JRZ works by sampling the external voltage in an integrating cycle. The voltage is then compared with an adjustable reference voltage. The result of the comparison will be used to control whether the current generated should go toward the output or toward the reference voltage. The period of this cyclic operation is determined by a count in a free running oscillator.
The basic configuration of the AD654JRZ consists of a precision voltage comparator, voltage-to-frequency and frequency-to-voltage converters, an adjustable reference, and a temperature compensation network, all integrated within a single package. It can be configured to provide either a voltage-to-frequency or a frequency-to-voltage converter with an amplified or unamplified output.
In applications using the voltage-to-frequency conversion mode, the externally applied voltage is compared with a precalibrated reference output voltage. The resulting comparison generates a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) signal whose duty cycle is equivalent to the ratio of the external voltage to the internally generated reference. This signal is then integrated over a period of time, resulting in a digital voltage-to-frequency conversion.
In frequency-to-voltage conversion applications, either a low-pass or band-pass filter is used to remove unwanted noise from the input signal. The filtered and conditioned signal is then applied to the control terminal of the AD654JRZ, and the resulting pulse-width-modulated (PWM) output is then reconverted to an equivalent DC voltage by passing the PWM output through an integrating filter.
The AD654JRZ is suitable for many applications related to control and automation including analog-to-digital conversion, data logging and scaling, as well as frequency control. Additionally, the converter can be used in automotive applications such as engine speed ignition control, traction control and vehicle speed control. In efficient energy management applications, the AD654JRZ can be used together with other power management devices such as motor controllers and power drivers. It can also be used in motor speed and position sensing because of its fast response time.
The AD654JRZ can be implemented in many applications due to the high accuracy and low power consumption of this converter. It features a monolithic precision voltage comparator, a temperature compensated linear reference, and a temperature compensated operational amplifier. The integrated reference is adjustable from 0.5 V to 5 V, ensuring a wide dynamic range for the converter.
