The AD7278ARMZ-RL is a high-performance, low-power, 4-channel, 12-bit SAR AD converter from Analog Devices. It is manufactured in LFCSP package. The device has an internal reference and operates from an equivalent single supply of 2.7V to 5.25V. The AD7278ARMZ-RL supports an input voltage range of 0V to VREF, and offers a full-scale input voltage range of 0.4V up to VREF. The device operates at a conversion rate of up to 1.5MSPS and is ideal for data acquisition and signal conditioning applications.

Working Principle

The AD7278ARMZ-RL utilizes a SAR (Successive Approximation Register) architecture. This architecture is based on a capacitive IC DAC and a sample-and-hold circuit. The IC DAC produces a voltage that is compared to the input voltage. The SAR logic decodes the comparison result and adjusts the IC DAC voltage accordingly, thus gradually approximating the input voltage. Once the error is negligible, the IC DAC contains the converted result. The SAR logic then stops and the conversion is completed.

The internal reference voltage of the AD7278ARMZ-RL is used for voltage reference and is generated through a precision bandgap reference circuit. This reference voltage is then used for both the sample-and-hold circuit and the IC DAC. The device has an internal reference buffer, which minimizes the output impedance of the reference. The reference buffer also prevents interference from external sources.
