AD7820KP Application Field and Working Principle

Data acquisition, or DA, refers to the operation of converting a quantity (measured of physical or electrical origin) into a digital signal or value. Analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are primary components in data acquisition systems, essential for converting analog into digital signals. The AD7820KP ADC, or Successive Approximation Register (SAR) ADC, is one such example of a high-performance and reliable ADC used in a variety of applications.

The AD7820KP is a CMOS, 12-bit SAR ADC capable of sampling at data rates up to 40 MSPS. Working Principle

The AD7820KP implements high-speed SAR architecture which is based on the most significant bit (MSB) first. This architecture allows for very fast throughputs without sacrificing accuracy. The AD7820KP also incorporates a 3-bit coarse digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and 9-bit fine DAC. The MSB comparator uses a 3-bit coarse DAC that samples the voltage after a single SAR cycle. The remaining bits follow the MSB to reduce the overall SAR search time. The AD7820KP also features an on-chip reference, allowing the user to set the full-scale input range to any value between 0V and 2.5V.
