The ADC101C021CIMM/NOPB is a monolithic analog-to-digital converter integrated circuit. It is one of the most popular data acquisition analog-to-digital converters (ADC) commercially available, and boasts a wide range of applications and multiple operating modes. The full range of applications and operating principle is discussed in this article.The ADC101C021CIMM/NOPB is a dual-channel, 10-bit, monolithic and integrated data converter, which includes a high-precision comparator, internal reference, and a 10-bit, successive-approximation type, A/D converter. It offers both a single-ended and a differential-input option. The device accepts an analog input range from 0 V to 2.5 V, and mounts a temperature range from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. It also operates from a single 2.7 V to 5.5 V power supply, consuming typically 10 mW of power.With a fast conversion time (10 µs) and a low supply current, the ADC101C021CIMM/NOPB makes it suitable for a wide range of applications. It is mainly used in consumer products meant to measure ambient temperature, but it is also used in: precision data acquisition systems, audio- and video-processing equipment, automotive electronics, portable healthcare equipment, handheld wireless communication devices, and portable consumer and industrial test & measurement equipment. The converter’s working principle is based on the solid-state circuit design principle, known as the successive-approximation conversion technique. Using a low-noise, high-precision charge pump and comparator, the analog voltage applied to the converter is compared to the voltage of an internal reference source, in steps of one-bit resolution. When a comparison is successful, the corresponding code is sent to the output register of the device.The ADC101C021CIMM/NOPB also embeds several features meant to guarantee a high level of accuracy, no matter the ambient conditions. These are mainly the Dis-FET (dis-charge FET), the over-voltage protection, and the proprietary fast-slew output buffer. The Dis-FET keeps the device’s input voltage resistant to undesired voltage transients, while the over-voltage protection keeps the converter’s output voltage level stable. Finally, the output buffer ensures a low impedance output stage which ensures the highest speed performance.The ADC101C021CIMM/NOPB is one of the most versatile, accurate and capable converters currently available on the market.
