Data Acquisition, often referred to as DAQ, is a technology used in biomedical engineering, control engineering, robotics, and other fields, to acquire and process data from physical sources. An Analog to Digital Converter, or ADC, is a critical component in a DAQ system. The ADC1173CIMTCX/NOPB is a 10-bit, 500-kSPS, voltage output, low-power SAR (Successive Approximation Register) ADC.

The ADC1173CIMTCX/NOPB is used primarily in medical and industrial applications, as well as in consumer electronics. It is limited in accuracy, as its 10-bit resolution yields only four decimal places of precision. Nevertheless, it is still a viable choice for applications that require low power and low cost performance.

The ADC1173CIMTCX/NOPB operates using a Successive Approximation Register (SAR) analog-to-digital conversion method, which makes the device suitable for low-power applications. In the SAR method, the digital code that corresponds to the voltage input is determined by comparing it to a reference voltage, then adjusting the comparison until a specific digital code is reached. This is done step by step, from the most significant bit (MSB) to the least significant bit (LSB).

The ADC1173CIMTCX/NOPB is designed to consume very low-power while operating, using only 350µA at 1.8V, and averaging only 800µA of total power. The ADC1173CIMTCX/NOPB also uses an on-chip reference and temperature sensor, which enables long-term stability and temperature compensation within the device itself.

The ADC1173CIMTCX/NOPB also includes an integrated anti-aliasing digital filter, which allows for an optimal input line performance.
