As an LED driver, the ADM00651 Evaluation Board demonstration platform provides a convenient and efficient way to learn its application field and working principle. In minimizing the development time and cost for users, ADM00651 Evaluation Board integrates the essential components for driving arrays of LEDs into a single solution.

The board includes three basic components: a driver IC, a high-voltage boost converter, and an isolated constant-current source. It is a suitable solution for general illumination applications such as street lights, commercial lighting, or industrial lighting where a high voltage source is used to power multiple strings of LEDs.

The driver IC is the heart of the ADM00651 Evaluation Board, responsible for transferring the power from an AC source to the LED strings. The IC is composed of high- and low-side gate drivers, high- and low-side power switches, a switched-mode power supply controller, an over-voltage protection circuit, and a PID loop fan speed control. The high-voltage boost converter DC-DC step-up the input from a low voltage to the required voltage for the LED strings. Lastly, the isolated constant-current source provides a safe and reliable way to power multiple LED strings.

The working principle of the ADM00651 Evaluation Board is relatively straightforward. The power from a low voltage AC source is first rectified and filtered and then applied to a switched mode power supply controller. This controller adjusts the duty cycle and frequency of the switching to maintain the desired LED array current for the LED strings. The output from the controller is then sent to the high- and low-side gate drivers and power switches, where it signals to the power components to turn the power on and off. The high-voltage boost converter steps-up the input voltage to the required voltage for the LED array and the isolated constant-current source provides the required constant-current pulse to the LED strings.
