The ADP5071RE-EVALZ evaluation board is a field-proven and reliable design developed by ADP5071, which is a family of ultra low IQ synchronous buck converters for offline applications. It is powered by an external AC/DC adapter regulated in a wide voltage range from 85VAC to 270VAC. ADP5071RE-EVALZ comes with adjustable output voltage and can provide up to 1.95A current output to meet the needs of quiescent current sensitive applications.

The ADP5071RE-EVALZ evaluation board is based on the MAX17001 synchronous buck controller, and it has three distinct operating modes: forced PFM, ON/OFF and AutoPFM. The operating mode can be changed by controlling the MODE pin voltage. In PFM mode the MAX17001 operates at the designated current limit value, and the voltage is adjusted by the external resistance divider. In AutoPFM mode, the controller uses a combination of PFM and pulse frequency modulation. When operating in AutoPFM mode, the maximum output current is limited to 70mA to prevent slow startup or damage. In ON/OFF mode, the MAX17001 outputs a low voltage to the MODE pin to enable the device when the voltage across the sense set resistor is above the voltage set by the voltage programming resistor divider.
The ADP5071RE-EVALZ has a simple architecture which comprises a synchronous buck rectifier, low ESR output capacitor and a bootstrap diode for charging the internal bootstrap capacitor. The PWM drive voltage which is generated by the MAX17001 is directly applied to the external MOSFET gate through a resistor. The MOSFETs have Schottky diodes at the drain and source to reduce the reverse recovery voltage. The reverse recovery current is reduced using the integrated Schottky diode, while the current output is limited by an external current sense resistor. The maximum duty cycle is limited to protect the external components from high current stress.
The ADP5071RE-EVALZ evaluation board provides an alternative to developing a custom SMPS design. It allows designers to quickly evaluate and prototype designs, test and fine-tune the power ICs, and optimize the system for load transient performance and efficiency. It is an ideal platform for designers who require a low-power, high-performance power supply solution for their application.
