ADP5304ACPZ-1-R7, or the 5304 for short, is a monolithic Switchmode Pulse Width Modulated (SPWM) regulator. It is designed to provide a high efficiency, low noise and low-dropout voltage regulator solution for use in portable applications. The device’s high switching frequency provides a small inductor and capacitor size, allowing for small size and low cost. The 5304 is the optimized choice for space and power conscious design applications that require high efficiency and low noise operation, such as notebooks and similar battery-powered systems. The 5304’s integrated high-side power MOSFET, low-side power MOSFET, and all the circuitry needed to control them, minimize board space and cost as well as reduce power loss and minimize heat dissipation.Application FieldThe 5304 is best suited for portable applications such as Ultrabook and tablets, as well as non-portable battery-operated instruments. It can be used along with a wide range of input and output voltages, processes, and power architectures.The 5304 is suited to applications where peak current requirements are up to 1.7A. It offers the ability to program input voltage set points and overvoltage protection (OVP) levels, and features soft-start, an internal feedback voltage reference, and frequency synchronization.Working PrincipleThe ADP5304 utilizes a fast-acting, high-frequency SPWM switching regulator, widely used in modern laptop power adapters and other power electronics. The regulator works by changing the width of the pulses transmitted to the power switch at a fixed frequency, in order to control the output voltage. The output voltage is proportional to the duty cycle – the proportion of time for which the switch is set to on compared to the pulse period. It is important to note that the frequency of the pulses used by the 5304 is fixed at 800kHz, meaning that regardless of the set point of duty cycle, the same switching frequency is used to control the output voltage. This makes the regulator highly efficient, as the losses due to switching are relatively constant across its operating range. The high switching frequency also allows for a much lower output ripple, as the output capacitor is able to respond faster to any voltage fluctuations. The 5304 supports a wide range of feedback voltage references, allowing the output voltage at any given time to be determined by a variety of methods.
