Data acquisition techniques enables processors to sense the environment and act in accordance with the information obtained. The ADS1202IPWR is a versatile integrated signal conditioning circuit for data acquisition applications, helping processors to measure and convert signals to analog-to-digital (A/D) converter outputs. It facilitates data acquisition from a wider range of sensors, such as accelerometers, strain gauges, force transducers, pressure devices, resistive sensors, and flow sensors. Additionally, it offers protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and power supply transients. This combination of features makes it applicable to a broad range of industrial, automotive, and medical measurement applications.
The ADS1202IPWR integrates an instrumentation amplifier, an A/D converter, and a range of digital, analog, and logic components on one chip. It is suitable for large-signal dynamic measurements due to its comparator inputs, a full-scale adjustable range of +12.5V, and dynamic range of 24 bits. The module combines a low noise differential amplifier with a high speed successive-approximation-register (SAR) A/D converter with programmable sampling rates up to 200k samples/second. The A/D converter provides 16-bit resolution for a great deal of noise suppression.
The device is built upon an advanced CMOS process, which helps it to provide superior AC and DC performance. The A/D converter also contains an internal temperature sensor for ±0.1°C accuracy over the extended -40°C to +125°C temperature range. To ensure wide system compatibility and enable application specific configurations, the ADS1202IPWR is offered in three versions – the standard “IPWR” configuration, the “IMAX” version with a low current drift amplifier, and the “IMTR” version with a high accuracy, low offset current sense amplifier.
The ADS1202IPWR is connected to the processor’s interface through a 3-wire serial peripheral interface (SPI). The interface configuration is programmable via SPI command bytes, thus allowing individual user commands to be sent to the device. An on-chip EEPROM stores the module’s configuration. As the EEPROM allows configuration to be stored for quick and easy retrieval, the module can be used with a wide variety of processors.
The device also offers an integrated instrumentation amplifier with built-in nonlinearity and gain error corrections. The amplifier has an adjustable gain ranging from 1 to 16 and a full-scale range set at +12.5V. The amplifier also features a filter system and a signal path which is free from linearity errors up to ±2.5V. The device can be powered by a single supply +12V/GND, with a maximum quiescent current rating of 120µA.
