Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) often play an important role in numerous applications. These digital devices measure an analog signal then convert its value into binary code. One such device is the ADS1247IPWR application field and working principle. It is a 12-bit, serial-input, analog-to-digital converter that is ideal for use in industrial, aerospace and automotive systems.
The ADS1247IPWR combines many of today’s data acquisition requirements into one integrated device, providing high resolution, low noise input, low power consumption and fast data throughput without comprising accuracy, speed or flexibility. It is designed to provide a programmable input sample rate up to 20 MSPS, operating from a wide range of power supplies ranging from 15V to 5.5V. This ADC supports a wide range of input voltage levels and can digitize current or voltage inputs with a differential input range from –2.5 V to +2.5 V.
At the core of this ADC is a high-speed signal processing system consisting of a signal sampler, a high performance low noise amplifier, and signal conditioning algorithms. The signal sampler acts as the interface between the input signal and the signal processor. It captures and stores a replica of the signal in its memory and takes a sample from this memory each time the input clock signal is received. The signal is amplified by the amplifier prior to being further processed. The signal conditioner adjusts the gain and offset of the Amplifier to match the full-scale input range of the ADC.
The signal is then passed through an analog-to-digital converter, which performs the actual conversion. This converter is the heart of the data acquisition device and is the component that produces the digital output data. It is a high-speed, low-noise CMOS analog-to-digital converter which uses a three-stage pipelined architecture and Multi-Level multi-stage distortion correction logarithmic amplifier to improve noise performance. The ADC can convert an analog signal into 12-bit binary data with a maximum conversion rate of up to 20 MSPS.
The ADS1247IPWR can include an onboard temperature sensor, digital-to-analog converter, digital communication interface and on-chip memory. This allows for greater flexibility and control of the data acquisition system. An external reference voltage can also be specified which is used to set the full-scale input voltage range of the ADC.
The output data from the ADC can be filtered, scaled and transferred to an appropriate memory device for further analysis or post-processing. Data can be transferred from the data acquisition system to a host PC over an industry standard bus such as USB, RS232 or Ethernet.
