Data acquisition consists of the sampling of data from physical sources and its conversion into a digital representation allowing for further processing by specialized digital devices. Analog to digital converters (ADCs) are dedicated devices for this purpose and offer improved performance in sample-rates, resolution, S/N and dynamic range. The ADS7813UE4 is such a device, offering 12-bit resolution at a maximum sample-rate of 500ksps. This chip is used in data acquisition systems, including consumer applications and instrumentation.

At their core, ADCs are synchronous, serial-input, parallel-output devices which employ a sampling technique. This consists of the conversion of a continuous analog signal into a discrete signal and its representation as a sequence of numbers, expressing the amplitude of the signal at the different times it was sampled. By accurately reproducing a physical signal in the digital world, we may access the power of computer-based post-processing and data analysis.

The ADS7813UE4, from Texas Instruments, is a low power and low noise 12-bit ADC operating in the range of 0-5.5V and featuring an internal oscillator to accept a sample rate of 500Ksps. The power consumption at the maximum sample rate is only 68mW, suitable for applications where power consumption is critical. It offers a peak-to-peak noise of 1.5µV which allows acquiring small signals with minimal interference.

The ADS7813UE4 is realized in narrow (SSOP14 package) and is easy to implement in systems. It has a total of five pins, one of which is used for power and the other four connected to control logic inputs and the analog input. It contains an on-board reference generator allowing for adjustment of the full-scale voltage. To provide for ease of use, the ADS7813UE4 also includes a window comparator to detect over/under range, and an analog input multiplexer which allows for up to four inputs.

The device can be programmed with four different operation modes. The first mode is the single-cycle conversion mode which consists of a single command execution followed by the output of the digital word generated. As the name implies, this mode offers the highest sampling rate but the lowest resolution and linearity. The second mode is the double-cycle conversion mode in which the output data is generated through two distinct cycles. In this mode, the resolution and linearity of the output is improved, with lower peak-to-noise ratio. The remaining two modes are cycle-by-cycle conversion and dual-channel conversion where the output data is generated through a sequence of commands and the device is capable of sampling up to two analog channels.

The ADS7813UE4 is a universal analog-to-digital converter optimized for use in a wide field of applications, including consumer data acquisition, audio systems and process/test instrumentation. Its small size enables a high portability of the instrument, allowing greater flexibility and accessibility within lab conditions. Its low power consumption makes it suitable for systems where short battery lifetime is critical. Its improved resolution, speed and linearity makes it an excellent choice for applications demanding for precise results.
