Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) are indispensable in today’s digital world. The ADS7844EBG4 is a high-performance, 8-bit, single channel, low-power, bipolar analog-to-digital converter (ADC) specifically designed for consumer, automotive, and industrial applications. This device is ideal for signal conditioning applications, ranging from industrial process control, data acquisition systems, automotive control and audio signal monitoring. The ADS7844EBG4 is a low-power, single channel, 8-bit analog-to-digital converter designed to provide accurate, low noise signal conversion in a variety of consumer and industrial applications. The device incorporates an 8-bit successive approximation register, a 9-bit track-and-hold amplifier, a reference buffer, an analog front-end, an 8-bit D/A converter and an 8-bit latch. Together, the ADC, track-and-hold amplifier, reference buffer and analog front-end provide a very high SNR of 109 dB, including the integral and differential nonlinearity (INL/DNL), offset and gain errors.

The ADS7844EBG4 is ideal for industrial process control, data acquisition systems, automotive control, and audio signal monitoring applications due to its wide input dynamic range, self-calibrating features, small size and low power. It is capable of measuring DC, AC and differential signals up to ±12.8V, without the need for external components. The ADC features programmable power-down modes and sleep modes, allowing the device to consume an extremely low amount of current while minimizing noise during operation. Additionally, the device features two power down modes (referred to as normal power down and sleep power down) which can be used to reduce overall power consumption.

The ADS7844EBG4 is capable of accurately converting analog signals into 8-bit digital signals quickly and accurately. The device operates with a maximum sampling rate of 40kHz, allowing for high speed data acquisition. Additionally, the device is equipped with an on-chip auto-zeroing circuit which enables it to automatically calibrate offset errors and improve accuracy. In terms of its working principle, the ADS7844EBG4 utilizes a successive approximation register (SAR). This process begins when a conversion start signal is received and the ADC’s internal internal clock starts operating. The SAR evaluates the voltage at the input with respect to a reference voltage, then proceeds to adjust the internal latch value bit by bit until the digital value is close to the input analog value. Once the correct value is determined, the result is stored in the internal 8-bit latch and a conversion done signal is issued. The device then falls into low power mode until the next conversion start signal is received.
