ADCs (Analog to Digital Converters) are important elements of the data acquisition systems, used to transform electrical signals from analog form to digital form that can then be interpreted and stored by a computer. The ADS7883SDBVR chip is a high-performance, low-power, 14-bit ADC that is capable of sampling input signals at speeds up to 400ksps. Utilizing both low-noise SAR (successive approximation register) and low-jitter delta-sigma conversion techniques, the ADS7883SDBVR offers high-accuracy data conversions.
The adaptive-params technology within the ADS7883SDBVR enables select parameters to be programmed. These parameters are used to optimize the performance of the device within a particular application such as industrial, automotive, communication, consumer, and medical. With a wide operating range of 2.7V to 5.5V and a temperature range of -40C to +125C, the ADS7883SDBVR is well suited for a variety of applications.
The working principle of the ADS7883SDBVR is an impedance bridge along with the successive approximation technique. An impedance bridge is composed of two circuits in an inverted T-shape. The bridge is balanced when the two circuits have the same impedances. The voltage across the bridge is then statistically zero as the current will remain balanced throughout.
The SAR circuit contains analog switches, resistors, and comparators. The switches are arranged in the form of a binary ladder, which is used to permit selecting the analog value proportional to the 0101 bit sequence generated by the successive approximation algorithm. The intervals between successive comparisons are determined by the SAR period which determines the rate at which data is converted.
The successive approximation register (SAR) architecture allows the ADS7883SDBVR to make binary decisions based on the value of the input signal. The SAR algorithm starts by setting the least significant bit (LSB) of the output word as “1”. If the bit is found to be less than the input signal, then a “0” is placed in the next bit. This process continues until all bits in the output word are set.
The conversion rate of the ADC is affected by the amount of time it takes for the SAR process to complete.The faster the rate of conversion, the less time there is for the input signal to be affected by any noise or interference present in the environment. To reduce conversion time, the ADS7883SDBVR uses dedicated voltage reference dividers and a boosted opamp buffer to increase the speed of the sampling.
In addition to the SAR circuitry, the ADS7883SDBVR also features an output delta-sigma sigma-delta circuit that helps reduce noise and jitter present on the output signal. The integration of the delta-sigma modulation helps the ADS7883SDBVR reduce the need for any additional low-pass filtering, as it will reduce the amount of quantization noise present on the output.
Overall, the ADS7883SDBVR is a high-performance, low-power ADC that is well suited for a variety of different applications. It has a wide range of temperature and operating voltage, is able to convert signals at a high rate of speed, and is able to reduce noise and jitter on the output signal.
