Data Acquisition - Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)

The ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) family of components is used in almost all areas of electronics in some form or another. The ADC8319IDGST is a highly precise, next generation 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADC, and is used to convert a continuous-time analog signal into a digital representation of that same signal. While ADC8319IDGST components can be found in a variety of contexts, they are most commonly used in medical instruments and systems, such as MRI, CAT, and ultrasound machines; embedded systems; and in industrial, automotive, aerospace, and safety applications.

Analog signals exist in nature, such as audio waves and light waves, and in many electronic systems, such as a microphone or a camera. In order to interface these analog signals with a digital data processor, an ADC is needed to convert them into digital values. The ADC8319IDGST is one such device and it operates by comparing the input analog signal to a sequence of reference levels which are generated based on a reference voltage.

The ADC8319IDGST works by first setting the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) output to the midpoint of the reference voltage. Then, the comparator inside the ADC samples the output of the DAC, input signal and reference voltage, and compares the two values. If theinput signal is higher, then the converted digital data will reflect a ‘1’, and if the reference voltage is higher, then the digital data will reflect a ‘0’.

The comparator then adjusts the DAC to the next reference level and repeats the comparison process. This process is repeated until the desired precision is reached, and this process of making one comparison at a time is known as the ‘successive approximation’ technique. In the case of the ADC8319IDGST, this process continues for 12-bits which allows for a number of 4,096 distinct reference levels.

ADC8319IDGST components are designed to be highly precise, which enables the 12-bit resolution to yield accurate signal digitization within ±10mV of the reference voltage. The devices also have a speed of 90µs per cycle, making them well suited to high-speed applications as well as medical and industrial applications. These components also feature power saving features such as a low power sleep mode, and have a wide operating temperature range of -40 to +125°C.

In addition to its practical digital signal conversion capabilities, the ADC8319IDGST offers digital features such as differential nonlinearity (DNL) and digital error correction. The DNL feature helps to reduce the number of errors at low signal levels and the digital error correction helps to correct erroneous or adversely transmitted data. Furthermore, the ADC8319IDGST has a low noise level of -95dB which helps to keep interference at a minimum.
